| | Hip Pain in Runners presented by Athletico Physical Therapy | With the fall weather and cooler temperatures here, running has become a more popular form of exercise. With increased running also commonly comes an increase in injuries, specifically hip pain. Hip pain can have a variety of causes, and it can be structural, overuse, weakness, etc. Most commonly in runners, hip pain is caused by increasing mileage too quickly and muscular imbalances/weaknesses.
Hip pain can be prevented in runners by increasing mileage at an appropriate rate, performing a dynamic warm-up and cool-down, and performing hip strengthening exercises. Click here for strategies to help prevent hip pain while running.

The excitement is building and we're confident your dedication and hard work will soon pay off. We want to reach out and share some last-minute advice and words of encouragement to help you perform your best on race day.
1. Rest and Recovery: In these final days, prioritize rest and recovery. Your body needs time to recharge, so make sure you get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, and eat well. You've put in the training; now it's time to give your muscles and mind the rest they need. 2. Familiarize Yourself with the Course: Take some time to review the course map if you haven't already. Knowing what to expect can help you mentally prepare and build a race plan. 3. Gear Check: Make sure all your race-day gear is ready to go. Lay out your race outfit, shoes, hydration, and nutrition well in advance of race weekend to avoid any last-minute surprises. 4. Hydration and Nutrition: Start hydrating well the entire week before the race. On race day, eat a familiar breakfast and if you plan to use gels or other fuel, have them ready. 5. Pacing: The excitement can lead to starting out too fast. Trust your training and start out at a comfortable pace; you can always speed up later if you feel good. 6. Mental Preparation: Visualize yourself crossing the finish line strong. Focus on your accomplishments and encourage yourself during the race - self-talk is a powerful tool. 7. Be Flexible: Things may not go exactly as planned, and that's okay. Stay adaptable and if necessary, adjust your strategy during the race. If necessary, seek medical treatment or advice at an IU Health medical tent before, during, or after the race. We're here for you when you need us most.
We fully expect that between your training and these tips you will have a great race - but no matter the outcome, remember you've worked hard and gotten yourself here! After the race, celebrate your accomplishments and don't forget to cool down, stretch, and replenish with plenty of fluids and food. If you have questions or need additional medical input or support, go to iuhealth.org/fasttracktocare and we'll be happy to assist.
