Hello ,

Welcome to the 2024 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon!

My name is Bill Burke, Race Director for Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. We are so happy that you can join us for this iconic event in San Francisco. Preparation for this race is critical! To assist you in crossing that finish line, you will receive weekly newsletters outlining important information about the racecourse and what to expect during race weekend (June 8 – 9).

I strongly encourage you to read each newsletter carefully, as the information will help ensure your race is as safe and successful as possible. With valuable training and course tips specific to the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon race, even our triathlon veterans can learn new information from these newsletters.

We are thrilled to announce that the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon will be hosting the California leg of the Professional Triathletes Organizations (PTO) T100 Triathlon World Tour on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The San Francisco T100 will feature 40 of the world's highest ranked professional athletes who will embark on a 2km swim in the San Francisco Bay, 80km bike ride, and an 18km run through the hills of San Francisco with a finish at Marina Green.

The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon team and I wish you all the best in your training and look forward to seeing you all in San Francisco this June.

Please make sure to watch the race tips videos on the Official Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon Website. If you have any questions, feel free to email the team at info@escapealcatraztri.com

All the Best,

Bill Burke

Race Director - Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon

TRAINING TIPS

While training for Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon here are a few tips to help get you across the finish line:

Swim

  • This is a challenging, open-water swim with a strong current.
  • Try to swim in open water as often as possible.
  • If you are not close to open water or it is not accessible where you live, getting laps in a pool and/or joining your local masters swim program will be critical.
  • Water World Swim (official water safety provider) will offer several opportunities to swim in the San Francisco Bay before the event. For more information, please visit: www.waterworldswim.com.

Building Your Workouts

  • Brick workouts are essential for this race.
  • After a long bike ride, try to do some running. You'll see that stacking your training is effective and will payoff on race day.
  • During your training runs, be sure to include some stairs. There are a good number of steps from Mile 2 through Mile 6, including the infamous Sand Ladder.

For more race tips, be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming newsletters and visit escapealcatraztri.com.

SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT

With time flying and Escape just 60-days away, we are starting the period before a race that we like to call the “don’t mess up” phase of training. While we still have the risk of cramming too much in, it is certainly something recoverable from—provided an adequate taper period is observed. But, better yet, let Humango’s AI-Coaching assistant, Hugo, guide you as you start the final few phases of your plan.

Doing the smart training now will make or break your race. So, the mission is to dive deep into workouts that mirror the race's demands—think open water swims in challenging and cold conditions, cycling on steep and hilly terrain, and trail running in sand, and on varying surfaces. Learn the course, test your nutrition, practice your transitions, hone in every part of your athletic self as you look to make this a race to remember.  You can take advantage of an Escape-specific training plan from Humango here.
