October is a favorite month for runners! Cool, crisp temperatures make perfect conditions for hitting the trails, the leaves are trying to give us a seasonal show, and it's time to map out your training for next year.  Plus, indulging in some seasonal pie post run is totally justified.

Here's what we've got going on this month:

  • It's spooky season! Track Club loves to celebrate Halloween! Bring on the costumes!
  • Trail running season--check out some local hotspots
  • Vocab word of the month: the World Majors (we know it's not a word, but we still wanna talk about it)
  • Running opportunities you should make sure are on your calendar.

🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN! ðŸŽƒ

Whether you prefer to spook, wow, or inspire, we want to see those costumes!

There's TWO opportunities for you to make sure your costumes are in top running shape this year:

1:  Tuesday, October 29th at University City High School starting at 7pm

2:  Thursday, October 31st for our Tempo Runs in Mission Bay starting at 6pm.

!!!There will be costume prizes!!!

Need some help deciding? We've found some running costumes that might have you screaming with delight:

1: Forrest Gump.  Has it been done? Yes.  Does that mean you can't throw on a pair of red shorts, a yellow shirt, a long beard, and a baseball cap and search for your Jenny?  I might not be a smart man, reader, but I know what a good costume is.

2: Pheidippides. The first man to ever run a marathon might have died doing so, but that doesn't make him any less worthy of being your costume go to this year. In his defense-he ran about 150 miles in two days, and I'm suspicious of the hydration stations available at the time.  Admittedly, he didn't wear much on his epic journey, but if you've got a white tennis skirt lying around, some brown sandals, and a white sweat band to pull back your gorgeous Grecian curls---we're here for it.

3: The Cheetah.  Draw inspiration from the fastest land animal in the world by dressing up as one this Halloween. With a stunning 0-60mph in 3 seconds record, who better to pay homage to at the track this year than this glorious spotted fashionista.  Don't forget to draw on your whiskers!

Trail Running
San Diego might be known for its beaches (and yes, there are trails there too!), but there are also great options to soak in the cooler temperatures along the miles of trails lining San Diego.

Where to run? Check these spots out!

1: Balboa Park:  Located in the middle of the city, Balboa Park boasts an impressive expanse of 65 miles of trails for your running needs.
2: Mission Trails:  Head east from the beach and you'll find San Diego's mountains ready to get you out of the city and into a nature state of mine.
3: Torrey Pines and Sunset Cliffs:  Want a beachy breeze and a trail to feed your inner wild? We've got you.  Head to either of these beachside preserves and get your camera ready to document your shoe's most enviable views.
4: Julian:  Just one hour away from downtown San Diego, this small mountain town promises to make you feel like you've left your worries behind when you refuel after some crushing miles with a warm slice of apple pie. Oh, and there are plenty of trails, meadows, and scenic views to make the running good too.
5: Got a spot to share? Let us know here!

Vocabulary Word of the Month: World Majors

Yes, we know World Majors isn't a vocabulary world.  But given the prestige the World Majors holds in the running world, we think maybe it should be.

The World Marathon Majors is a collective of 6 of the most famous marathons in the world.  Boston, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, London, and Berlin. To complete one is to know honor, to complete all 6 is to know glory. Started in 2006, this competitive series of marathons is a coup de resistance for many runners, both amateur and elite.  Admission into each race often includes a lottery, raising money for charity, or elite level competition time, and a healthy dose of good luck.

Run all six and you join the exclusive club of Six Star Finishers.  These finishers receive a six-pronged coveted medal with space for each illusive star earned at the completion of each race.

As of August 2024, there are only 17,026 people to have ever completed the World Majors.  A few of them are running next to you in the SDTC.
